BEING AN INTERN AT ELLE TAIWAN

by - June 22, 2019

Before we get on to the main point, let me introduce myself to those of you who do not know. I am currently in my third year studying at Department of Advertising (for the first two years was actually under undeclared major in college of communication) at National Chengchi University, as known as 國立政治大學。

In my second year, I started to look for internship opportunities. I always wanted to apply for fashion magazine industry and I went for 2 interviews but they did not hire me at last. Until I saw the advertising department of Elle Taiwan, they are looking for interns too. I received their call right after I sent them my resume, and asked me to go for an interview (and welcome me to join them).

Great, everything went smoothly this time. I finally got my first internship, under the advertising department, at Elle Taiwan.

Biggest lesson I've learnt so far.

It's nearly been a year for being an intern there. Besides I most learned from my own mistakes, the biggest lesson I've learnt so far during the internship was writing (in mandarin) and seriously I need to say that I've improved a lot. Not to say that I'm bad at mandarin, communicating is not a problem but writing. For example, you are going to introduce NARS's new beauty makeup products. The thing is how you going to make the article more interesting include the title, what kind of style of photos or videos you going to shoot for their products, just to attract more readers and reach the aims of clients. It sounds like an easy task, but at the very beginning, I realized that I was lacked of vocabularies. I practiced a lot, read all the articles from different sites literally everyday. Till now I found that it's really fun "playing" with words and there will always be room for improvement.

Motivations at work?

First thing first, advice to all of you that you are not encouraged to apply for an intern position at an industry you are not interested in. You need passion and be prepared to work very hard. Look, they actually gave me a chance to learn, to grow. It motivated me to work harder and make sure my quality of work. Besides, dress yourself. Being well presented will motivate you, trust meeeee. I remembered for the first two months I will do the full makeup look to work but now I will skip the eye makeup and only use the lightweight beauty products. For the outfit part, I'm no longer doing a fashion show, comfort over style :)

Personal advice for someone wanting to get their internship.

Before you start applying for the position, if you have any new experiences along the way, make sure your resume is up-to-date. Running a blog talking about fashion, lifestyle and more somehow it's additional support for me. Just go ahead if you have any ideas like if you want to create a profile for your photography works or to start a blog like me, just do it. You can set high goals, but take it slow and start it small. All the practices, experiences and connections are your essentials to help you be a better-self and help you in securing your future dream job. On the side notes, don't ask for an internship through facebook or twitter, it's not the right place to do so. Email them.

So far these are my personal thoughts based on my own experiences and I decided to put them into words. It's an exciting opportunity to try new things and surprise myself, it's all the baby steps before you get into the real world. Always stay humble and be patient, I know I can walk far, we won't reach the top immediately.

Thanks all for reading. If you have any questions or any experience to share with me, feel free to inbox me, I would like to answer all of them. Wish you all the besttttttt of luck x
